The FSR Women promoted the annual Octoginta 10 KM Time Trial that probably started back in the mid-80’s. Over the years it’s highlighted new riders who really developed strong form over the course of the cycling year and this year was no different with the GP VeloTek women’s squad. The Octoginta tour is on Sunday and is the final event of the Road Season in North East Kansas. Enjoy the pictures and results from this very rainy event.
Team GP VeloTek women’s squad is growing and you have to admire these new women cyclist for racing in such tough conditions. Natalie Katz was racing her first race ever and Erin Shaffer and Julie Funk were racing their first Time Trial.
Coach Jim returned to good form with a 2nd and 3rd and plans to race 3 times next year. Juniors Kyle and Conner Rainey topped the Junior podium and Will Burrus and Chase Conderman showed real class racing in the storm. I had a hard time controlling my bike the 2nd race and these guys weight a third of me!
Team GP VeloTek has won the most number of National Champion Jerseys of any team in Kansas history. Our secret is recruiting and supporting beginner cyclist and helping them develop into elite athletes. Jack Funk posted the fastest TT of the day and has earned many National Championship jerseys.
I asked Natalie Katz a few questions as her rainy race was impressive.
What do you do for a living? I am an MD/PhD student at KU Medical Center. 8 year program, 2 graduate degrees, half way through
What got you into racing? I have always wanted to get into the sport of cycling. Living on the west coast for 7 years I watched many people fly past me on their bikes. But I was too intimidated (and broke) to start on my own. Flash forward to graduate school– I listened to Brianne talk about her races and training and thought, “I want to do that.” So one day I went to Lawrence and Bri took me to Sunflower and I bought a bike. That was in March. I’ve been hooked ever since.
What was going through your mind racing your first race ever in the rain?
1) Just keep pedaling, just keep pedaling (cue music from Finding Nemo’s Dory- just keep swimming, just keep swimming), 2) Don’t give in, don’t you dare give into the fatigue, and 3) I am cursed with bad weather when it comes to team functions!
What’s your “dream” goal as a cyclist? To dominate any and all races 🙂
Anything you’d like to add? Thanks to GP VeloTek and all the women who have helped me get where I am so far. Couldn’t have done it without you all!
Check out Kim Morris Pro Photo Man who shot some great shots.
